I read an article called "The Healthiest Carb You're Not Eating." I found the article at http://www.prevention.com/health/nutrition/smart-shopping/the-healthiest-carb-you-re-not-eating/article/f1018169c1903110VgnVCM20000012281eac. This article wrote about the benefits of eating pasta, whole grain pasta. When many people diet they try to cut out the carbs they eat daily and pasta is a main source of carbs. However, this article talks about how whole grain pasta is actually better for you and can even stop weight gain. I never realized how much good, natural ingredients that processed foods remove. For example, everyone loves the taste of regular pasta but whole grain pasta tastes just as good and it has so many more things that help your health, and fight diseases. Whole grain pasta includes folate, vitamin E, magnessium, potassium, selenium, lignans, and phenolic compounds. It also contains a significant amount of fiber. This amazed me because fiber can help reduce your risk of heart rate or diabetes, two very serious conditions. However, people don't take these into consideration before removing this health secret from their diet. After reading this article it made me think of the book "Mountains Beyond Mountains" and the people of Haiti. In Farmer's experiment in the beginning of the book he compares the rate of cure in people treated for the same disease. However, one of the groups received visits from volunteer medical personnel, nurses, doctors, food and even child support. The people who did not receive these things were not cured as well as those who received them. Taking away the personal aspect of medicine is similar to taking away carbs, good carbs, from your diet. They both can put your health at risk and they are both things that can easily be controlled. So, don't be so quick to judge food "unhealthy" when it could save your life.

What an excellent article choice Jessica! What with prom coming around, I think most girls are having second thoughts about that extra pizza or spaghetti. However, this article shows that there are some good carbs out there to ensure you get enough fiber without the consequences of a ton of fats. That food is whole grain pasta, which they actually serve in the cafeteria in our high school! The fact that there is fiber is huge as well, as I recently read about how fiber is essential to your diet, and especially important for children to get enough of it.
ReplyDeleteThe title of this article caught my attention which made me apt to read it. I thought it was a very good article because it encourages people to enjoy eating what they want and maintaining a healthy diet. Personally, I hate fast food or processed food that is sold by McDonalds and Burger King so if more people read this article maybe they will realize how bad processed food is for them and the nutrients that it leaves out.
ReplyDeleteLike Erin the title of this article caught my attention. After taking Anatomy last year I learned about how there are good carbs as well as bad carbs, but I thought the way this article explained good and bad carbs really well and it reinforced what I learned last year. I also thought that the part about processed food was interesting, because I always knew how bad fast food is for you but I never really understood the science behind it.
ReplyDeleteJessieee, great article! Its obvious that people cut carbs when their on diets so this is a great point. But there are both good and bad carbs and you shouldn't cut them out of your diet completely so I think this is a good point that you made.
ReplyDeletethis was a good article becuase it distigushed the diffrence between good carbs and bad ones. good being that they give you energy and bad that they have a ton of calories.
ReplyDeleteJessica, I really enjoyed reading this article because I can actually apply it to my own personal lifestyle. It was really cool to learn how eating whole grain pasta can actually help you lose weight rather than cutting out carbs all together. Like Izze said, I think it is very important for teens to be able to distinguish between healthy carbs and unhealthy carbs along with healthy fats and unhealthy fats. I thought you did a very good job of summarizing the article too because you gave all of the important points without it being the same as reading the article. I also thought the connection that you made between this article and Mountains beyond Mountains was very cool because it was kind of abstract and symbolic but it made a lot of sense and it was a great way to connect this article to our class!
